Identity

2024

Identity is a collaborative exhibition featuring both solo and joint works by Etienne Farrell and Mark Mallia. First presented in Luxembourg and later in Malta, the work explores the complexity and ever-evolving nature of personal identity in the contemporary world.

The exhibition features hanging fabric pieces (120 x 80 cm), each delving into the expressions, qualities, uniqueness, distinctiveness, appearances, beliefs, and personality traits that shape who we are.

The works respond to the growing impact of globalisation on identity. As cultures converge and the world feels increasingly interconnected, our sense of self is becoming more fluid and at times, more standardised. Traditional and unique ways of being are gradually replaced by more homogenised expressions that transcend national and cultural boundaries.

The work raises urgent and timely questions:
Do we truly decide who we are?
Are factors such as social media dictating the standards we feel pressured to follow?
And in a world that often demands conformity, are those who resist labelled as outcasts or freaks?

Identity invites viewers to confront these questions and reflect on their own place within a world of shifting norms and blurred boundaries.

Only the work created by Etienne Farrell is featured here.
