The name is borrowed from a slurring of “L’eusses-tu-cru?”, a stock phrase used in 17th Century France by theatrical fools, meaning, “Would you believe it?” or in that particular context, “Would you have thought a woman’s head could be fixed?” The story goes that those who did not fit into the “ideal wife” description would be taken to Lustrucru, a blacksmith turned surgeon, to have their brains reforged and purged of their unconventional ways. The work in Lustucru explores unconventionality; the feelings of being misunderstood and misinterpreted, failing to fit into the rigid lines dictated by society.
